Writer brings HIV/AIDS Activism and Yoga Together During 2006 AIDS Conference
August 2nd, 2006, Toronto- Writer and activist, Michael McColly,
whose article "Sahodaran" is featured in timeless books' Inspired Lives:
The Best of Real Life Yoga from ascent magazine, will be teaching two
workshops at Downward Dog Yoga Studio (735 Queen Street West, 2nd Floor,
416-703-8805) during the 2006 AIDS Conference in Toronto.
On Thursday,
August 17th, 3:15 - 5pm, McColly will teach HIV positive participants in his
free workshop, "Healing the Heart, Healing the Body: The Benefits of Yoga for
People Living with HIV."
On Friday, August 18 th, from 2 Ð 3:30pm, McColly will
be offering another workshop, "Spiritual Activism: The Practice of Karma Yoga"
at a suggested donation of $35 (half of the proceeds of this workshop will go
to benefit Women's Positive Network). This workshop will explore breath work,
meditation, asana, journaling and discussion to consider how a spiritual practice
can be expanded by taking action and integrating it into professional, family,
social and political lives.
McColly's teaching is part of a growing movement
in yoga that looks at its deeper spiritual roots makes it applicable to daily
life and social change. Stories such as McColly's presented in Inspired Lives
bring together artists, activists and yogis including bell hooks, Arundhati
Roy, Yann Martel, Georg Feuerstein, Swami Radhananda, Joan Halifax Roshi and
many others practicing engaged spirituality.
